When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
Matthew 9:36-10:1
With thanks to Graham Daniels and Deeside Christian Fellowship. Daniels teaching here seems to me to be helpful to us as parents. Some of our children have turned from God. Some never knew God in the first place. And yet as parents I am sure many of us have prayed for them to know the one who has compassion for them, to be set free from all that ails them. In my arrogance, in my pride, have I believed that it was all up to me? And it never was. Jesus sees our children and sees them - harassed and helpless, ravaged by wolves, and He has compassion on them. His heart for them is to rescue them, to heal them, to bind up their wounds, to drive out evil influence and replace that influence with his peace, with the comfort of the Holy Spirit. And may we, whether parents or others, may we let Jesus heart fill us, His compassion, fill us to overflowing. May we continue to pray for our children and others, and where God gives us an opportunity, even if all we can offer is our stumbling, nervous selves, may we share the good news of Jesus Christ, for in the end, it always was His harvest.
Father in heaven, I need you, I need your heart in me, a new heart, a heart filled with your compassion, a heart for your harvest. Create in me a new heart. Guide me as I pray, that I will pray in your will, for your kingdom to grow here on Earth, for my child and all those you lead me to pray for; that they will know how much you love them, that they will recognise the wolves in their lives, and seek your protection, your aid. May our children be led to you, the healer of hearts, the binder of wounds. Thank you and praise you that your love for them is and always has been greater than mine. Amen
